Background of the Study

Taxation is a key source of revenue for local governments in Nigeria. In an effort to improve revenue generation and ensure efficient resource allocation, local governments across the country have introduced various tax reforms. Funtua Local Government in Katsina State has implemented tax reforms aimed at increasing local revenue through mechanisms such as improved tax collection, broader tax bases, and more effective tax enforcement. The effectiveness of these tax reforms in increasing revenue generation and addressing local development needs is an important area of research. This study evaluates the impact of tax reforms on local government revenue generation in Funtua and examines whether these reforms have led to improved service delivery.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the introduction of tax reforms, Funtua Local Government continues to face challenges in generating adequate revenue. Issues such as tax evasion, low compliance, and inadequate infrastructure for tax collection may be hindering the success of these reforms. This study aims to evaluate the extent to which the tax reforms in Funtua Local Government have improved revenue generation and whether the reforms have addressed the existing challenges.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of recent tax reforms in increasing local government revenue in Funtua.

  2. To assess the challenges faced by Funtua Local Government in the implementation of tax reforms.

  3. To examine the impact of tax reforms on service delivery and development in Funtua Local Government.

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. The introduction of tax reforms in Funtua has significantly increased local government revenue generation.

  2. Tax evasion, inadequate tax administration, and limited public awareness have hindered the success of tax reforms in Funtua.

  3. The increased revenue from tax reforms has led to improved service delivery and local development in Funtua.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide insights into the role of tax reforms in improving local government revenue generation in Nigeria. By examining Funtua Local Government, it will contribute to understanding the challenges and successes of tax reforms, offering valuable lessons for other local governments facing similar challenges.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the impact of tax reforms in Funtua Local Government, Katsina State. Limitations include the challenge of obtaining accurate data on revenue generation and the potential bias in self-reported data from local government officials.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Tax Reforms: Changes made to the taxation system, which may include adjustments in tax rates, tax base, and tax collection mechanisms.

  • Local Government Revenue Generation: The process by which local governments collect funds, typically through taxes, to finance public services and development projects.

Service Delivery: The provision of essential services to the local population, such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and security
